Hello All-
There's been some discussion about possible ties between TRP and the Dilbert
comic strip, which is on the Yoyodyne server. From what I can gather, Yoyodyne
acts as an Internet game page for commercial sponsers. They have recently
conducted games promoting the last two Dilbert books. The following blurb
concerning the name was taken from their site at: http://www.yoyo.com/about/
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yoyodyne first appeared in Thomas Pynchon's novels The Crying of Lot 49
(a great book, by the way) and Vineland. Yoyodyne was a toy company
turned failed defense contractor. Of course, we identify more with the
toy company!
While Pynchon's novels are well worth reading, we actually got our name
from the 1984 Buckaroo Banzai movie, starring Peter Weller, John
Lithgow, and bunches of other people. In this case Yoyodyne was the name
of the company run by the Red Lectroids, the bad guys. Of course, we
identify more with the Black Lectroids and Team Banzai! If you want more
information on the movie, check out this superb site
(http://bbs.annex.com/relayer/bbanzai.htm).
-------------------------------------------------------------
So there you have it.
Hope everyone is enjoying the Festival of Mass Consumption.
