The ABC (thats A fer Australian) recently screened Karaoke and Cold
Lazarus back to back which helped to make sense of the latter which
revolves mostly around Albert Finney's cryogenicised head. Set in the
future the series is tinged by the really sad perspective of knowing that
Potter knew he
was dying when he wrote it and that this was his last chance to say
something. It is full of
an unusual ease with death and the role of thought in defining what an
individual is and can do and the suffering that can go on when you only
have your own memories to play with. Melvyn Bragg's interview with Potter
shortly before his death, outlined his plans for the series and what he
hoped to achieve. They're not his best work, not by a long shot, but
Finney is great, and the context of the works are provoking and well
worth a look.
