Banana peels

The banana peel smoking fad of the Summer of Love, 1967, was probably
started as a hoax. It somehow became public belief that the dried inside
of the banana peel was high in serotonin and would get you high. I
remember a parade of banana peel supporters in the East Village,
carrying the appropriate banners and wearing banana costumes (very
revealing, you can be sure). This was one of the high points of the
Summer of Love, itself probably the high point of the psychedelic
revolution.
