Even more Pynchonesque is the name of this ball shaped form of carbon:
Buckminsterfullerine (affectionately known as Buckyballs).

They were named after Mr Buckminster-Fuller who designed the geodesic space
frame used for one of the pavilions at the Canadian Expo 67.
