On Fritz Lang, though not, I think, on TRP: we in London are at this
very moment able to wax epic with a spanking new print of Godard's Le
Mepris, courtesy of the National Film Theatre.
In it, Fritz Lang plays Fritz Lang (or does he?) to Jack Palance's
producer and Michel Piccoli's screenwriter of (no kidding) Homer's The
Odyssey: The Film. Brigitte Bardot switches from blonde to brunette to
signal the passage of our time and proves she was better without the
seals.
Lang is Joyce's panaroma of all flowers of speech incarnate and quotes
Racine here, Goethe there like George Lucas never would. And were it
not ten years ahead of the write time he would certainly quote
something TRPy.
And, oh, could he wear a monocle as if he had brought it with him from
the womb.
