Speaking of the old Tonight Show, I remember the Jack Paar years when Peter
Ustinov was a frequent guest (late 50s?). One night he (Ustinov) told an
anecdote about a post-WWII black marketeer whose specialty was stealing cars.
Because it was common to theft-proof a car by removing it's rotor, he carried
around a velvet-lined case into which were snugged rotors for many popular
makes ("Opel, Mercedes, Fiat..." in thick German accent). Of course, this
story later turned up in one of our favorite books, virtually verbatim.
So, TRP does (did) watch television, to reference a thread from several
months ago.
PS- Did Tom Waits use that phrase in a lyric, or only liner notes?
