All this talk of Buckaroo Banzai inspired me to go rent it
tonight. I shouldn't have bothered. I just watched most of it before
turning it off, feeling I'd wasted my time.

Couldn't agree more. It's a cartoon, and a bad one at that. It's
supposed to be based on a comic book, which might have redeeming
qualities, but you couldn't tell it from the movie. On the other hand,
being a great novelist doesn't make you a great screen writer. Given
Pynchon's quirky tastes (I stopped reading books w/ TRP blurbs, and I
found the Lotion interview singularly uncompelling) I wouldn't put
something at the BB level past him. However, as he goes out of his way
to criticise COL49 in Slow Learner, it seems doubtful that he would
refer to it heavily in a script.
