I'm apparently the only person on the list who ever heard of Lotion before
Pynchon did them the favor of writing liner notes. I'm also apparently the
only person on the list who likes the band. Maybe there's a connection?
Maybe going out to buy an album because a WRITER you like has endorsed
them isn't the best way to approach MUSIC. If TRP appeared in an ad for
Jimmy Dean longpig, I doubt I'd develop a taste for human flesh alla sudden.
Whereas, if I were offered some exotic dish unsuspecting-like, who knows?
(Human: finally, an exotic meat that doesn't taste like chicken!) My point
being... um.
I guess my point is that I do like Lotion's music (Full Isaac in particular),
and I do think Pynchon's on to something. And I think it's great, and
appropriately odd, that he did them the favor of adopting them publicly.
After all, you guys bought at least two copies of their tapes, two copies
that wouldn't have sold otherwise. But maybe this music is something best
discovered accidentally.
Maybe the liner notes/interview were baby steps toward the limelight. I
mean, if TRP edged far enough out of the shadows to do an interview in
Esquire for some obscure (and only arguably good) band, how far will he be
willing to go to promote his new novel?
