i just 'greped' my electronic Finnegans wake copy and the phrase does not
appear there (unless of course Joyce changed it completely). Anybody with
an electronic copy of Ulysses?
On another thing I do not know if you people have noticed in the second
paragraph the reference to the CRystal Palace fire in 1933(?) which was
in fact a great spectacle for all those witnessing it. The destruction of
the palace was sort of signifing the end of the British empire, and i
think this "end of the superpower" theme for britain appears again in GR.
