Dear communicants,

Just a dispatch from the mists of Lineland. If any of you are going as crazy
waiting for the Book as I was for my review copy, might I suggest passing the
time with Dava Sobel's "Longitude." I might be lost if I hadn't read it a
while back, and I wish I'd read it even more recently. Any other supplemental
reading suggestions out there?

By the way, I always loved "Now everybody" for its union of the temporal and
the spatial. While this isn't something I ordinarily look for in a book, the
brilliant conflation of those two realms always reminds me of the
10-AM-last-Friday-of-the-month air raid sirens of my Los Angeles childhood.
Also the end of Sidney Lumet's and Walter Bernstein's sadly neglected movie
of Fail-Safe. If Piuma Road doesn't work out for a SoCal P-list meet, perhaps
we ought to consider one of the 200 or so disused siren towers around
town....

We now return to your regularly scheduled programming,
David
