Barth's _The Sot-Weed Factor_, a pretty decent ~800-page novel, may
provide some useful background on archaic terms like "'Sblood!" and
"swive," along with nautical practices such as "the code o' the sea"
and a bit of Maryland history.  I believe its time frame is about a
generation prior to M&D.

I do intend to plow through Sobel's book B/4 April 30.  Thankfully,
it's considerably less than 800 pages!  Thanks for the advice.
