And it is, indeed, a contact sport.  As quoted in THE NEW YORKER 14 Jul
'97, (the issue with the Holt threatens the Boneheads bit), on page 88:

                           THERE'LL ALWAYS BE AN ENGLAND

                Seven spectators and 11 competitors were injured
                yesterday at the annual cheese-rolling contest at
                Cooper's Hill, Brockworth, near Gloucester. The
                most seriously injured was a man who suffered head
                injuries in a 100ft. fall down the hillside, as he
                tried to avoid a bouncing 8lb. Double Gloucester
                that had rolled off course. The winners of two races
                later found that their cheeses had been stolen.
