Clocks and Time

James Burke in the _Connections_ TV show and book (and I'm sure any number
of other people--but most not so entertainingly) traces the development of
the mechanical clock at least to the 12th C. and the water clocks in use
at monasteries to keep track of the canonical hours after the sun went
down. The length of their hours varied seasonally and they had to tinker
with the mechanism to include this variation.
