Rebekah dying while giving birth might help explain Mason's difficulty in
forming close relationships with his son -- leading up to the very touching
reconciliation of father and son, Mason and Dr. Isaac, near the end of the
novel (and I can't help but speculate how much of Pynchon and his own
father, and perhaps P's own son, might be lurking behind that passage on p.
768).
