i think that the sense of immediacy, even danger on the internet comes
from 1) the interactive potential of the internet, and the accelerated
spreading of news (how long did it take the 'mit speech' to traverse the
globe?) and 2) fear of something misunderstood or not understood at all.
poor vonnegut, spooked by technologically enhanced
communication/information dissemination--he is the perfect target for a
hoax of this nature. it is so much easier to get to someone now, with
the internet, in a way. on the other hand, maybe the profundity of
information debases everything. who knows? then again, i could be in my
room cursing at some article in the s.f. chron and no one would know
about it. now, i'm here on my cyber-box speaking my mind and WHO KNOWS,
maybe pynchon is reading this, deleting my message at this very
