CFP: The Law of Nations and the Origins of Empire
We are looking for proposals for this panel, which we are chairing
at the 1998 meetings of both the South Central Society for Eighteenth
Century Studies in San Antonio, February 19-21, and the American Society
for Eighteenth Century Studies at Notre Dame, April 1-5. We are
interested in any papers that discuss colonial encounters during the long
eighteenth century (1660-1830), and are especially interested in the
tension between the emerging concepts of liberalism, nationalism, and
international law, and the evolving practice of empire. Please send
copies of brief proposals, along with mailing address, phone, and fax, to
both sa29 at columbia.edu and aneill at eagle.cc.ukans.edu by 10/1 for SCSECS
and 9/15 for ASECS, specifying which conference you would like to attend.
