Gosh, thank you for making my morning.  I adore this novel, and despite
what Baker's more recent work may arguably have devolved into, I still
insist that THE MEZZANINE is among the finest things I've ever read.  But I
haven't thought about it in years.  I may have to steal some time away from
my dissertation (eek -- yes, my edu is showing) to revisit.
