I agree there seems to be some strong resonance between Pirsig and
pynchon. It has been some time since I read
Zen, but was it not Pirsig that pointed out that one of the fundamental
problems with western culture is that Plato and those other fascists put
truth(and the state?)
above the good; quality no longer is important. Pynchon does a good job
of tracing the destructive curve of this little notion of slavish
devotion to empty
(or at least insignificant) empirical truths nowadays worshipped as
"Science."
