Mortality and Miscellaneous in Florida

Having just read "Mortality and Mercy in Vienna" for the first time (I
thank those responsible for making it available, webwise) I find myself
wondering if anyone here has heard why TRP left it out of "Slow Learner."
I enjoyed it despite flaws similar to those Pynchon points out in the
stories that were included. The bit about Seigel's roommate Grossmann
"going native" at Harvard had me laughing out loud. My best guess is that
Pynchon was uncomfortable with the rather facile description of Ojibwa
mythology presented in the story. Any other opinions or facts?

This leads me to wonder, just why am I reading TRP's entire output before
tackling GR (my all- time favorite book) again? Why am I not
participating in the GRGR? Is it the same quirk that condemns me to stare
in slack-jawed bewilderment at squadrons of lycra-clad cyclists while
pedaling my bike alone in swimsuit and sandals? (You can do that in
February In Florida.) You tell me. These are questions that may never be
answered, no doubt to the relief of fellow p-listers. At any rate I guess
we'll all be singing from the same hymn book come April.
