     People are STILL mentioning academic novels! And I'm still surprised that
nobody has mentioned the one that often gets labeled as the best: Randall
Jarrell's Pictures of an Institution. Another that nobody has mentioned and
that nobody seems to know is just as good: John Williams, Stoner. 

     I like academic novels. I love travel books. Can everybody get off academic
novels and mention some travel books? I note that the formidible Steeley does
in his Top Ten: Matthiessen's The Snow Leopard. A fine book. But not, to me, the
best. The best would be either Peter Fleming's Brazilian Adventure or Moritz
Thomsen's far more recent The Saddest Pleasure.
