The point exactly: the returns are not all in and will not be for a
long time to come. That was the trigger for the (belligerent, bad
week, - apologies, Andrew) response to "six-of-the-best for naughty
technology." Here, Pynchon's work, especially GR, is valued precisely
because of its control, the fitness of the images and sounds, and its
deployment of language. Its value as a Field Guide to Our Problems
and Their Solutions - other than as a datapoint, the 1973 cut - fades
rapidly. Left behind is the afterglow, the nimbus of loathing for any
enterprise that requires the efforts of more than thee and me - and
we're not too sure of thee.
