Not sure it goes by way of a companion but I really enjoyed `New
Essays on The Crying of Lot 49', one of a series of `New Essays'
collections. If I recall correctly - less and less likely as my
trousers auto-roll and peaches lose their flavour - highlights include
Duffy on Hushing Sick Transmissions and Pierre-Yves Petillon on
Wilderness (contrast Hooker's `we would have a garden love of God's
own planting' with Hawthorne's natives in `The Scarlet Letter').
