it's in the book _Culture of Redemption_. I remember that the essay was
first published in a magazine like Raritan, or Representations. Anyone?


(Re Finland: I think it really is a relatively motherly culture; now
this doesn't mean that women would have reached a parity, oh no. The
relative matriachality may have its origins in days when the Swedish
army  -- during the long wars of so called "early modern" period -- 
used to recruit practically all Finnish men healthy enough (usually
sending them to the front as a bumber between the enemy & the Swedes
themselves), so women got used to care of the house and agriculture.)
