There's a couple of excellent books on the mythology of the "Hollow Earth",
which inevitable go into the mythology of the "hidden rulers" supposed to
live within. _Arktos_ by Joscelyn Godwin & _Subterranean Worlds_ by Walter
Kafton-Minkel.
While this sounds like way leftfield stuff, I, after much deliberation,
have concluded that I like Hollow Earth wackos much more than UFO wackos.
There's a Hollow Earth mailing list which would doubtless appeal to many
Pyn-heads; if pressed, I'll post subscription info.
Pynchon himself touches on this in _V_ with the lost land of Vheissu (sp?).
There have been numerous expeditions to find the hole in the polar ice.
Perhaps some of them have been... TOO successful.... [BWAHH-HA-HAAA!!!].
Some good references on Naziism & the occult:
_Morning of the Magicians_ by Pauwels & Bergier (extensively quoted by
Cortazar in _Hopscotch_)
_The Occult Roots of the Third Reich_ by Goodrich-Clarke (kinda dry &
academic; tends towards over-skepticism, given the nature of the material)
_Unholy Alliance_ (can't remember author's name; Peter someone, it's very
recent).
Also, here's a nice little on-line document over in the A-albionic archives:
http://www.msen.com/~jhdaugh/a-albionic/gopher/conspiracy/newage/nazi.occult
IllumiNet press is another endless font of info about this type of stuff.
And yes, it's been an obsession of mine ever since I did my undergrad
thesis on _GR_ & started realizing that, hey, this shit ain't made up.
