I don't think so.  There are actually things in this sad world that are 
not funny, racism for example.  Pynchon obviously meant Marvy to be 
ridiculous, and for us to laugh at him -- but not at his racism.  Or 
(Pynchon being the perverse teacher that he is) if we do laugh at Marvy's 
racism, we're meant to not win.
