I think that it might be good to bring a little paranoia into this
dialogue... let's be pynchonites and examine this a little more deeply, eh?

Just to begin:

I ask: what role does the media have in the establishment of the expected
order and language (whitey-talk)? I mean, the only reason that there is
any one dialect that is expected over all the others is that there was, to
begin with, a standard written english. Propogated by Noah Webster and
then by what has become the MLA et al, say. This written standard is used
for business and law way more than any more noble kind of letters. It is
useful to the authority structure. This fixed form of writing then moves
to the audio and finally the audiovisual media, which admittedly today
makes the baseline of American values. The way race and race issues are
handled in the media (read: on TV) is the state of race and race issues in
America (as far as most people are concerned), no? So here we have a
mechanism to explain the privlidging of _a_ voice to The Standard... I
think that this is good for Them, They love it because it conceals the real
within an envelope of syntax and semiotics.... in a lot of ways the
media/technology/problems-caused-by-media&tech jumble is the 20th Century
version of the Pyramids... we are building these big, mostly useless (but
awe-inspiringly HUGE) things and keeping ourselves busy and repressed,
sedated and safe (for Them) while we keep the economy going and are
farmed/robbed.

somebody start riffing! bring it all in --
