I dunno about that.  "Nigra" is an old and accepted Southernism, and it's
pronounced entirely differently from "nigger," which is also an old and
accepted Southernism.  They are--or were in the late '70s, which is about
the last time you heard the words in conversation with people who didn't
really know you--two very separate words in connotation.
