Hey, foax-
The first print, first edition run is variously reported at 4,000
and 6,000 copies. What must also be considered is that more than half of the
first printing is known to have gone to libraries; we can assume that those
have been read/handled out of existence. $800 is the average price of a
fine/fine copy, with uncorrected proofs and Advance Reading Copies averaging
$2500. I have seen offered for sale a typed letter signed in TRPs hand,
offered at the staggering price of $15,000, and the man is alive, for crying
out loud! (BTW, the letter was to Farina, discussing the blurb for "Been Down
So Long it Looks Like Up To Me".)
Henry Holt is reporting the first edition of "M&D" to be set at
200,000 copies; "Vineland" was 100,000 in the first. Does anyone besides me
think Holt may be over-estimating the literary taste of America?
best, Dale.
