With all due respect, history took a long time to happen, and as I grow
older I don't mind taking a long time to read about it, slowly. Right now
I'm 200 pages into _Infinite Jest_ & trying to decide whether or not to
ditch it and return to the second of the three-volume Modern Library
edition of _Decline and Fall._
Yes, the synchronicities (apparent, real?) of "On This Day" are
enlivening, especially for the conspiratorially minded, but I wonder:
Given that we have 365 and change days/year, sooner or later *something*
is going to happen in apparent conjunction with something else. Sort of
like reading the I Ching or the cards or the stars or whatever rings your
pattern-building chimes ...
