a modest proposal

In case anyone missed the SL debate the first time around (as I had), I
recommend doing a search through Andrew Dinn's pynchon-l archive. Use
"Spielberg", "Schindler", or "Riefenstahl" as keywords and you'll have lots
of reading.
Defenders of SL should make a special effort to see _Shoah_ (the Lanzmann
film, not the Spielberg project), if they haven't already. It is a shame
that the mass-media (for lack of guts), corporate sponsors (out of fear),
and the general populace (who continue to desire streamlined narratives
about survival against the odds) ignore this extraordinarily courageous
film.
Cheers,
Paul

"No one proposed that Claude Lanzmann get an Oscar for having made _Shoah_,
while Spielberg is being mentioned for the Nobel Peace Prize. I mean
Lanzmann spent 10, 15 years, whatever, and probably ruined his life working
on _Shoah_. ... I think it might have something to do with the quality of
the two movies. _Shoah_ does not reassure us." -- Jim Hoberman, Village
Voice, Mar. 29, 1994
