Viking is now owned by Penguin. The original cover art on the Viking
edition was kept when they reprinted it as a Penguin paperback. The
latest printings have a new cover with a blueprint of an aircraft V-2.

The recent discussion of editions of TRP's books got me looking at mine.
For GR, I was surprised to notice that the large-format paperback with the
orange cover, the sun, and a stylized skyline that runs across the front,
spine, and back was printed at least twice, by different companies. The
first was a Viking Compass book originally issued in 1973 and apparently
the original paperback issue of GR. It includes the clouds (and even the
horizontal lines) on the title page referred to earlier. The second was
issued in the eighties by Penguin. The cover is identical except the back
has a banner obscuring part of the skyline. The title page does not have
the clouds.
The cover of my prized 1st edition 3rd printing hardcover of V. (bought
used about ten years ago for ten bucks or so) has "V" embossed all over it
in a variety of typefaces. The dustcover has a large white V. on a ruled
gold ground with a sky shading from blue to purple and A NOVEL BY THOMAS
PYNCHON at the bottom. The back of the dustcover is white, lists all of
the chapter titles, and has a blurb from _Time_.
