Not sure what Pynch supports, but  I would think he criticizes what we do 
with those aspirations.  What he seems to focus on is the natural, human 
need and as you say, longing, for immortality.  How can any writer of 
metaphysical themes not  mention it?  Isn't that the goal of many a 
mystic?  Pynchon necessarilly has to leave everyone hanging at that 
moment of revelation, with the warning, yes we want that revelation but 
be prepared, as Dr. Zais says to Charlton Heston at the end of Planet of 
the Apes, "You may not like what you find".
