I reply here only to ask about the Vulgar Boatmen.
I dated . . . well, let's just ask: do you refer to the GAinseville
VB's, or other? Is Walter with this version? Saw him with the Silos
(remember, long ago named Rolling Stone's best new American band?) in
Tampa years ago. Anyhow, there's this great club here, in Tempe (near
Phoenix, which I LOVE) called Gibson's--very small but gets great bands.
I saw The Heads (No Talking; Just Heads), with all the old group sans
David. Singing was Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde) and she was
great! I always thought I hated her. Also saw The Wedding Present, who
were fabulous, and also some other one-hit-wonder band of late. Coming
are Cibo Matto (wonderful Japanese, all-female band doing disco songs
nearly all based upon food--you recall "I KNow My Chicken"?) with The
CArdigans (MIke apologized to me when he said he'd be marrying the
singer--ha ha). Oh--just realized how the above sounds--I did not date
Walter. Anyhow, on with this drivel. I always listen to The Smiths, The
Stranglers (I know, grow up), The Talking Heads. Now, I"m listening to
The Velvet Underground a lot, and I am amazed at how little attention
Cale and Eno's collaboration got (the most recent, can't recall the
title, emblematically). Others. . . . Beck, U2, Liz Phair, No Doubt (I
know), a lot more., Mike is mysteriously caught listening to Steely Dan
lately (ugh--can't take it, ever since I listened to them the whole night
through once, while enjoying some horrible drug in the 80's). He always
listens to David Bowie and Velvet Underground, but is always up on what's
"current," through CMJ (he used to manage the college radio station at
USF and hasn't left certain practices behind). Oh, CMJ--College Music
Journal (they put out a monthly mag with a free CD inside --a sampler).
Sorry to condescend to those who know this already.
Oh, that *was* a thrill.
What I am reading: Ira Shor's "When STudents Have Power: Negotiating
Authority in a Critical Pedagogy." I'm reviewing it and it is really
pretty good. Also, still plugging away on a slow 2nd read of GR.
Glancing back at IJ now and then (give him a chance, eh?) A funny
thing: My mother-in-law got a collection of essays called "Tennis or The
Meaning of LIfe" to which DFW comments on the back cover: "I have no
complaints except that the title's redundant." ha. I liked it anyhow.
Ok, also reading a book on the history of science (Einstein's REvolution)
which is really informative, esp toward my diss., also a book calle d
"The Philosophy of Science," an apparent doctoral thesis with some merit,
and a lot of Composition journals. God I'm exciting.
