Along with Christoph Anders, Heiner Goebbels &
Alfred Harth, Chris Cutler formed CASSIBER,
who released 4 LPs - 'Man or Monkey', 'Beauty
and the Beast', 'Perfect Worlds', and 'A Face We All
Know'. Early stuff is more song-based improvisation,
moving towards the last ('A Face...') which is a single
long 'soundscape/drama' - with texts by Cutler, TRP,
and others.
Alas, I can't find my copy at the moment - it's in a
box somewhere while wholesale de-/re-construction
being carried out at my abode - as soon as I can track
it down, more details will follow. I haven't listened to
the record for a few years now but as I recall, it's not
their best. Wild stuff -quite unlike 80s Pere Ubu - and
probably not to everyone's taste...
All the Cassiber stuff now on CD -contact ReR in the
UK or Cuneiform in the States for more details (both
are online).
Chris Cutler - I don't know if he is from South Africa
originally - he studied at Cambridge in the 60s, where
he played with Henry Cow, and later with the Art
Bears, News From Babel, Cassiber, & many other
bands. He formed Recommended Records in the late
70s to promote interesting/complex/improvisatory
music - inspirations seem to range from Faust, Magma,
Beefheart, to all manner of other things (the 1st side of the
Henry Cow 'Concerts' splices together 5/6 tracks which
move from Brecht-like song to prog-rock to free improvisation
to guitar solo and back again - astonishing). The label, now
ReR Megacorp, have promoted and released music from
e.g. Eastern Europe and South Africa - including the
Kalahari Surfers - so it sounds like the same guy.
Any more info needed just yell.

Addenda to 'Whatcha reading?' -
Rikki Ducornet - The Butcher's Tales & Phosphor in Dreamland
Erik Satie - A Mammal's Notebook

Th-th-th-that's all folks,
Burhan
