sacrifice, try Girard's _Violence and the Sacred_. Gives something like
Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" a whole new twist....

p.s. first day of school and we don't have to go--snow days ROCK! (why
didn't they think of this in Southern California?  The only days UCLA
closed were for the riots.  Oh yeah, and the Northridge quake.  But
neither of those incidents granted our day the romantic elan this one
promises to hold. Hot chocolate WITH whipped cream, any one?)   Diana
