Paul notes:
"Reminds me, near the end of _The English Patient_, the Sikh sapper will "see"
the same "scrap of newspaper"--this time electronically over his portable
radio.

Causes a really abrupt shift in that book's outlook, reminiscent of the ending
of
Forster's _A Passage to India_ (to return to a nonnuclear setting).

The old East-is-East and West-is-West idea."

In the book, that scene *does* seem to come across as somewhat forced, though
thematically consistent with the novel as whole. Still, its exclusion from
the movie is one of a number of changes that have annoyed me no end about
the film, despite some real strengths of acting and style.
