  Finished his recent novel ROSE, over the holidays and it has enough
things pynchonian (or whutever) to amuse. It takes place in George
Orwell's Wigan in the colleries; the "hero" is a quartan-fevered
mining engineer (gold!) at odds with his sponsors; the two female
interests turn out to be the same person (oops, a spoiler)... 
do-gooder ministerial mine owners.... etc.

The time frame is the 1880's...
