Probably the recent Lattimore connection in the news was the death of Alger Hiss.

<circling back> I was too young to care at the time, but in post-Cold-War 
retrospect, both "who lost China?" and "who stole the Secret of the Bomb?" seem 
like historico[hysterico?]-political red herrings.

We'd won the war, hadn't we? Crushed evil, vindicated the Four Freedoms, made 
the world safe for... no, that was the one before... and everything was supposed to 
be fine, but here were foreign and domestic anxieties rearing their heads again... 
and by Jesus, someone was going to pay, whether their actions had made a 
difference or not.

Maybe we should forget Sen. McCarthy and call the politics of the era 
"McGuffinism."

Or of any era?
