As this has been labeled the unofficial Gaddis list, just thought I'd mention
that I read in Publishers Weekly that William Gaddis' next book tentatively
titled Agape Agape : The SecretHistory of the Player Piano will be out late
next year. The book will be Gaddis' first non-fiction, and readers of JR will
recognize the title as similar to the long book on "mechanisation and the
arts" that Gibbs is attempting to write throughout.
Which leads to an interesting (I hope) observation, that is the long
gestation period of so many so-called pomo big books. Am thinking of course
of M&D, and also Coover's Lucky Pierre, Gass' The Tunnel, and a book I rarely
see mention of on this list, or anywhere else for that matter Joseph
McElroy's amazing Women and Men, (one of the few recent novels that can be
compared favorably with GR, and infinitely better than the over-hyped
Infinite Jest, Imho). There are others of course, DeLillo's Underworld comes
to mind, maybe some other p-listers can name a few.
Just struck me that most of "our" guys tend to agonize (if that's the
right word) over their work for long periods, in contrast to the
novel-a-year-types that populate the best-sellers lists and the shelves at
your local Borders and B&N. Wondered if anyone else had an opinion on this.
Oh, almost forgot interesting to note in light of the long standing
connection between Gaddis and TRP, the new book (Gaddis') will be published
by none other than Henry Holt and Co.!
Thanks, Frank Young
