This is true.  But the footnote is that Lattimore's numerous friends in 
the State Department stood up for him through all this, and that's part 
of the reason for McCarthy's jihad against the State Department; and the 
President of Johns Hopkins, Milton Eisenhower, stood up for him and that 
was part of McCarthy's campaign against President Eisenhower for being 
"soft on Communism."  Such was the intellectual level of McCarthyism, and 
it was the anti-Eisenhower campaign that finally undid McCarthy -- even 
the rest of the troglodytes in Congress could see that it was a bone 
stupid move.
