Owen Lattimore

  The story goes that Dulles asks McCarthy to lay off a friend of his,
and McCarthy agrees; McCarthy then picks up, at random, Lattimore's file.

  Lattimore was a professor at John Hopkins, not a government official.
Lattimore didn't lose his job, even the FBI didn't take the Red spy
accusation against him seriously, and he was vindicated. For this reason
Lattimore always denied he was a Red Scare "victim".
