I wonder about the parallel universe idea.  I think r&j don't end up
together because their romance parodies what blicero, gottfried and katje
are doing.  i.e. the deliberately hollywoodish aspect of the romance is its
appeal and its downfall, and roger gets somewhere less comfortable but more
politically aware because of the Beaver's success

Modern man likes to pretend that his thinking is wide-awake. 
But this wide-awake thinking has led us into the mazes of a
