Mr Smarty-pants Musikar, you are dead! Firstly, it's L-E-H-R-E-R, in
case you have difficulty putting your fingers on the right keys of
your keyboard. I suppose you probably do because like most so-called
"intellectuals" you are too wrapped up in Theory - by which I mean
mental masturbation - and not enough in Practice - by which I mean
physical exertion, including hitting the right keys on your computer.
No I did not know Tom, but I have a truly tragic tale to tell
concerning him. The truth is that once I was trying to perform his "I
Got It From Agnes" to an audience comprised exclusively of members of
a small amateur theatrical group to which I belong, and their family
and friends. And my pianist didn't know the tune (despite my having
lent him my copy of _Too Many Songs By Tom Lehrer With Not Enough
Pictures By Ronald Searle_), and he got hopelessly lost and I sang
the last verse a capella. Worse still, the compere introduced my
song in such a way that he gave away the entire joke of the song! If
that dosn't get you marching in the streets, nothing will.
And yes, wise-guy, I've just had an article published (stateside too)
and I've just been commmissioned to write another, so fuck you all!
:-)
