Peter's retort:

>Regarding the drug culture in VINELAND - In what year was the novel set?
>Regarding the drug culture in real life - I find it quite funny that people
>can try to spin some sort of "LEAVE IT TO BEAVER" idea out of what was
>basically a dangerous time - Sure there were a lot of "groovy" things going
>on and sure there were even some folks quite generous with their drugs (for
>better or worse) but the idea of a gaggle of urban Robin Hoods is merely
>myth (alas)

Yes, it's all too foolish -- both the horror stories AND the fairy tales.
The truth of the matter is (and was): the vast majority of drug users in
this country are a "silent majority" -- working their jobs, shopping at the
malls, raising their kids (or being raised by their parents), crossing in
the crosswalks and stopping at the red lights ("to live outside the law,
you must be honest")...
and I maintain this is the truth, in spite of the media's habit of using
***DRUGS!*** as a cheap-thrill topic, the same way Spielberg uses Nazis.
