The future of the list?

Hi all,

John Krafft proposes:

I have reluctantly come to the same conclusion, for the same reasons
John has.  I truly believe that it's a choice between moderation of 
some sort, or losing some of the best contributors we have, to the
great detriment of the list.

Like John, I've been here since 1990; in that time, the list has
weathered many firestorms, but nothing as ugly, protracted, and useless
as the last several months.   I think it's time for a change, and I
would gladly consider, even design and participate in, a solution that
will work for the majority of us.
