let's self-moderate....

There is obviously a problem with signal to noise ratio on the P-List and
since it may be impossible or take a long time to sort out how to moderate
the list and maintain its energy, let's try an experiment in
self-moderation:
1) avoid long quotations of previous messages; there have been several
cogent arguments to avoid litter via repetition but the practice
continues. One can easily copy and paste comments that one wants to
comment on with most programs or one could briefly cite the passage one
wants to comment on; let's stop excessive re-posting...
2) don't post without making a point of some sort; before posting, one
might ask oneself: do people really want to hear this? what is relevance
to P-List?
I hesitate to go on because I really want to discuss Pynchon and MASON AND
DIXON on this list. So while no doubt everyone will want to post their
moderator/no moderator opinion and reflect on the list itself, let's also
keep the substantive and interesting posts coming. Indeed, I would like to
thank Andrew and the other MDMD commentators for doing excellent
summaries, commentaries, notes, etc. I also greatly appreciate the many
people who have do web research on the novel or other topic, made
available the web site address, posted relevant material. Personal
reflections and responses are also interesting -- as are some of the
polemics and flamings. BUT with some self-moderation and reflection the
NOISE could be cut back....
