The Jesuits were historically the group that excelled at this observing
and reporting to superiors (remember V.?)... Is it possible that the
Rev'd hooked up with them, who were perhaps in extemporaneous
collaboration with the Company for their own purposes? He could have
been following and reporting on M&D on their African voyage as a trial
run for determining their fitness to the far more important purpose in
America (and their capacity to follow orders without too many
questions), where the Jesuits (if not the Company) had an immediate
interest. This possible link to the Jesuits would also explain Wicks'
skepticism towards his "Parsonickal Disguise". I'm far from finishing
M&D at this point (but not in a hurry), so my apologies if these
speculations run counter to later events.
