I didn't see this mailing show up, and, with the emergency shutdown,
who knows? I'll repost it:
Ketjap, along with previous mentions here of being a symbol of Dutch
colonialism (after the Dutch accepted it), apparently was, before that,
also a link, however indirect, to the notion of interracial coupling
(a theme in M&D).
Found on --http://www.wp.com/WOCDIR.COM/prim_ind.html:
On the island of Singapore the Chinese slaves, who were all men,
married the local Malaysian women, and in doing so created what
is known as "Nonya" cuisine after the slang name given to the offspring of
their interracial coupleings. Typical seasonings for the area include: Kecap
or Ketjap Manis, Galangal, Krachai, Lemongrass, Shallots, Kemiri
nut, Garam Masala (an Indian inspired 6 spice curry: corriander seeds,
black peppercorns, cumin, cloves, cardomon and cinnamon), Kafir
lime leaves, Tamarind, Garlic, Shrimp paste, Fish sauce and Chiles
National dishes; Indonesia: Gado Gado-Vegetable salad with peanut
sauce. Malaysia: Satay- Seasoned grilled meat, usually beef.
Singapore: Chili Crab-Crab cooked with chili sauce.
