I think that Wear is connected to the German word Wehr which simply 
signifies a trench or wall to fend off enemies(?) or water(this, of 
course is all speculation). Regional names in parts of Germany are often 
Landwehr or some such name. I wonder how deep I'm getting into water 
with this...
