The Manechian ref. goes to many of the standard oppositions as with 
your example Mine (dark, subterranean) vs. above ground (light, 
open), the clean vs. the fuliginous. Also in chpts 21,22 there are 
more references to such dualities (does anyone else think of HG 
Wells, The Time Machine, when reading this section?)
